Professional Networking Site LinkedIn.com: The Premier Site for Green Job Seekers

U.S. Green Technology | Where Main Street Meets Green Street

For many who remember the days of buying a newspaper to read the “want ads” or pounding street pavements to find employment, LinkedIn makes it exceptionally easy to find job openings, particularly green environmental jobs where required skills are often a prerequisite.

In fact, there are over 7,000 Green-related Groups on LinkedIn, making this website a true goldmine for finding jobs and professionals centered on everything green and sustainable. Using specific keyword phrases like Renewable Energy, Sustainability, Green Building, Green Design, Green IT and Green Manufacturing will quickly narrow your search.

When looking for current jobs, many openings automatically pop up based upon your profile information and industry selection. I’ve found only two minor shortcomings on LinkedIn for job searching. One is the rigidly structured one-industry bias which does not include the words Green or Sustainability – only Environmental Services.

The LinkedIn category description irony is that every industry has the potential for green functionality. An example: selling Electric Cars falls under Automotive and is not really considered Environmental Services although it’s a very green job. For this reason, when seeking Green Jobs, networking within the Green Groups may prove equally beneficial for finding employers and dream green jobs.

Secondly, as for Green Technology Government Jobs, LinkedIn is primarily for private industry, so don’t forget there may be openings posted on City, County and State agency websites. At a time when people everywhere are seeking stable employment, additionally turning to local Government resources should not be overlooked.

Navigating LinkedIn as a job search and professional networking tool is easier than first glance. First, it’s good to build and grow your network of contacts in an organic way based on people you already know, and there’s a built-in feature to invite people to connect in a very personalized way.

Whether currently employed or in between jobs, I always recommend including a unique personal introduction specific to the contact you’re trying to reach, rather than letting LinkedIn do the talking for you. For example, I receive many requests from people who say they’re my friend even though I’ve never met them!

Keeping your profile updated, complete and grammatically correct is essential, as is adding a photo so potential employers can recognize a name and face together. Recommendations are also extremely helpful for any Human Resource Managers to see, giving you more credibility when applying for jobs or hoping to connect with them.

Prior to the LinkedIn phenomenon, Craigslist was a popular place to job hunt, however because of the difficult economy, it’s been overloaded lately by fake ads from spammers who simply want your email address to fill your inbox with junk. In addition, many Craigslist job postings don’t clearly show the company, so you never really know who’s on the other end. We should all be wary with the rise of personal identity theft.
