A total of 40 representatives of Congress and five senators recently were given an “A+” for supporting Americans for Prosperity, a Washington, D.C.-based grassroots political advocacy group. Americans for Prosperity is fighting to keep the government from using climate change initiatives to hide tax hikes from the public.
The Koch Brothers’ Americans for Prosperity awarded the passing grades to individuals who in 2011 voted in a manner that agreed with the organization’s views regarding topics such as pre-empting the Environmental Protection Agency’s power to regulate greenhouse gases in addition to stopping ethanol subsidies. The Koch brothers essentially are oil billionaires who have solid right-wing views, pointing to their conservativeness.
A major point on which politicians were evaluated was their signing of Americans for Prosperity’s “No Climate Tax” pledge, the aim of which is to prevent the Obama administration from concealing huge tax increases necessary to fund their “bailouts and big government spending” inside a global warming bill.
Americans for Prosperity said they always gave members of Congress notice that the organization would be evaluating them based on how they voted on specific issues. The political group also gave Congressional members the reasons why they advocated voting a particular way.
The 45 members who received an “A+” basically supported the Americans for Prosperity’s viewpoint on all topics, thus earning them scores of 100 percent. All of these individuals were Republicans and came from states ranging from Missouri, Utah and Louisiana to California, Florida and Maryland.
