When you imagine a solar panel, your mind likely drifts to the flat-surfaced device you attach to the top of your house. That flat music conductor stand-type device has been leading the way in solar energy and solar jobs, but a new invention is making music in the ears of green energy lovers: The new accordion-shaped solar panel.
Solar panels have morphed from being simply flat to now being three-dimensional, much like our modern television and film technologies. Massachusetts Institute of Technology scientists have found that the new solar energy towers actually are capable of capturing more sunlight – from double to more than 20 times the amount of energy that can be captured by flat solar energy panels.
These new accordion-style solar panels especially proved superior at times when the sun’s energy is more difficult to attract – on cloudy days, during winter months and in areas that are not close to the sunny equator.
Solar power– and subsequently solar energy jobs – carry great promise simply because the price of solar energy cells are decreasing much more quickly than the costs of installation, wiring and structures that support solar cells. The tall, accordion-like solar cells can be big money-savers for customers since up to 65 percent of solar energy costs are directly tied to getting permission to use land for solar power as well as installation expenses.
It’s possible that the new three-dimensional solar energy panel could even serve as an electric vehicle charging station in the future. Maybe you’ll be able to purchase the panel in a flat box and then unfold it when you get to your home or business. The possibilities for this new solar energy technology are endless, but for sure, it is creating music in the ears of green enthusiasts.
