You might be wondering, why all the big fuss about wind energy and jobs? After all, it’s not like wind energy is the only form of green energy that is employing American workers and helping Mother Earth. The truth of the matter, though, is that wind energy is being used more than you might think – which means it is employing more people than you may realize. Based on a recent report from the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), if you take away a single wind farm, you say goodbye to a whopping 1,000-plus jobs.
The process of erecting a 250-megawatt wind farm easily generates almost 1,100 jobs in addition to pouring tens of millions of dollars into its local community, in the form of taxes. The fact that about 75,000 Americans are employed in the wind power industry easily demonstrates how widespread wind energy really is. Wind farms today produce a level of energy that is equivalent to a dozen Hoover Dams, says the NRDC.
A third of totally new generation capacity that is built in America is associated with wind energy – second only to natural gas. With the production of wind power rising by more than 170 percent over the past four years, wind energy appears to be a powerful contender in the race to make America greener and to strengthen the nation’s still weak employment numbers.
Whether people are skilled in sales, operations, planning/development or manufacturing, the wind energy is a viable industry, experts say – an industry that will simply die soon without the Congressional renewal of a wind production tax credit that has kept it alive over the past four years.
