What’s the greenest room in your home? It’s probably not the bathroom. That’s where you can run through 50 gallons of water per bath, use toxic cleaners to get rid of mold and hard water build-up, and overuse paper products like toilet paper and tissues like crazy. Many homeowners are turning to contractors with experience in environmental jobs to make their bathrooms greener.

Some of the most popular renovations include installing high-efficiency toilets. Old toilets can use about seven gallons of water per flush. If you’re not convinced a high-efficiency toilet can get the job done, you might be surprised. One Ultra High Efficiency Toilet uses only 0.8 GPF (gallons per flush). It can save upwards of 20,000 gallons of water a year. As if that weren’t cool enough, it’s called the Stealth Toilet. Because it’s quietly awesome.

Contractors working environmental jobs can also install ceramic tile on your floor or walls. Natural stone tiles are in these days, but ceramics have a smaller eco-footprint. They can be made of recycled materials, and are less susceptible to mold damage.

Not that there aren’t plenty of natural cleaners that can remove mold with a power that rivals the way the Stealth Toilet takes care of… other things. Method products can make environmental jobs out of even the toughest clean-up routines.

During renovations on environmental jobs, a contractor may also suggest installing a low-flow faucet and shower head, and switching out your lights for high-efficiency LEDs. You can keep the faucet off and shorten your showers all you like, but electricity uses water too. A single kiloWatt hour can consume about two gallons of water in production.

Environmental jobs in contracting are especially popular for businesses these days, who must appeal to consumers concerned with sustainability.
