Energy-efficient cars are the wave of the future, but how much of the future will be dominated by green vehicles? Experts say it’s more than you think. If you’re looking for a green job, consider the most fuel-efficient cars of 2012 and what experts say is a promising field as consumers look to be more friendly to Mother Earth.

Here are some of the five greenest cars of 2012, according to experts:

1) Ford Siesta: This gas-powered car gets 33 miles per gallon, with the fuel cost per year being around $1,554.

2) Scion iQ: This hatchback gets 37 miles per gallon, with the yearly fuel cost being around $1,385.

3) Lexus CT 200h: This luxury hybrid vehicle gets 42 miles per gallon, with the fuel cost annually being about 1,221.

4) Toyota Prius: This hybrid family car gets 50 miles per gallon, with the annual fuel cost reaching just $1,026.

5) Mitsubishi i: This fully electric car gets the equivalent of a whopping 112 miles per gallon, with a fuel cost of just $540 annually.

Experts say that vehicles very well could become more and more green over time, especially with America now aiming to make vehicles in the United States average close to 55 miles per gallon by 2025 – that’s just 13 years away. The question is whether the SUV will disappear by 2025 as a result.

This likely is not the case, experts say. As long as automakers continue to produce fully electric vehicles, they gain high levels of fuel-efficiency in the eyes of the government. This simply means that they can still produce gas-guzzling SUVs and other “non-green” vehicles and still look good in the eyes of the government because their electric vehicle fleets balance out their gas guzzlers, thus keeping their fuel-efficiency averages strong still.

Either way, green jobs definitely look promising in the automotive field. As long as the government continues to have its way in this industry, you can bet that the production of electric and hybrid vehicles will remain a priority during the coming decade – and beyond.
