German-based SOLON Corp. recently announced plans to shut down its solar panel manufacturing plant in Tucson, Ariz. The move will eliminate 65 green jobs, but the company says it will concentrate on developing solar energy plants in the utility and commercial sectors instead.

Los Angeles, California-based Sunvalley Solar, Inc., announced today that it earned a profit of $208,610 for the second quarter of 2011 – thus jumping from experiencing a net loss just a year ago to a net profit due to an increased demand for solar power systems within the past year.

Ford and SunPower Announce Electric Vehicle Charging Station

Ford Motor and SunPower recently partnered to allow buyers of Ford plug-in electric vehicles to charge their cars using a charging station. These plug-in vehicles include the new Ford Focus Electric, which is slated to be available at the start of 2012. The partnership formed on Tuesday permits people who purchase the Ford-SunPower “Drive Green for Life” program to get a charging station that features SunPower solar panels that are attached to the roof of each customer’s vehicle.

Green Jobs Training Receives $2 Million in Florida

A group of Miami organizations recently received a grant of $2.6 million from the U.S. Department of Labor that will allow them to provide green jobs training. At least 40 people each year will benefit from this Green Jobs Innovation grant program by participating in six sessions over three years. The training will give them credentials for green jobs in weatherization and construction that are recognized by those in the industry.

Arizona Gets More Than 400 Green Jobs

The U.S. Department of Energy recently announced that it has completed a loan guarantee of almost $1 billion to Agua Caliente Solar LLC for a solar power project that will create 410 green jobs in Arizona. Of the 410 clean energy jobs created by the Agua Caliente Solar project, 10 of the green jobs are full-time operating jobs, while the remainder of the clean energy jobs includes construction positions.

Solar Industry to Boom in California

California’s Sempra Generation of Sempra Energy and Pacific Gas and Electric Company said today that they have entered into a contract for 150 megawatts of solar energy at a plant called Copper Mountain Solar 2. The contract will last 25 years, will produce 175 green jobs and is made possible because Sempra Generation’s Mountain Solar complex has expanded in Boulder City, Nev.
