Light and shadow interplay make this eco furniture a work of art. Image from Alvidesign.com.

The Alvisilkchair by Alvidesign is something to behold. The sturdy silk threads weave in and out of one another, creating an optical illusion. Depending on how you view this eco furniture, it looks like it’s not completely “strung together.” Thanks to the minimalist design and thin, harp-like beauty of the silk threads, I thought it looked more like art than functional eco furniture. Until a little research proved the Alvisilkchair can, indeed, support human weight.

The frame of the eco furniture is FSC-certified oak. The silk threads come from SidenThai, which creates eco friendly silk with natural dyes. After dying the silk, the company can reuse the water to feed the plants they source their dyes from. Even their silk worms are fed an organic diet!

It’s also nice that the silk threads are spaced so closely together. This would more evenly distribute your weight and help prevent the feeling that the strong strings were cutting into your skin after sitting for a long time. (The backs of your thighs and butt may still be pinstriped when you get up, though.)

Alvidesign is a Swedish eco furniture and design company created in 2007. Founder Asa Karner says, “My ambition is to design furniture and products, using environmentally friendly materials with long durability, a focus on sustainable production methods and humane working conditions.” During her education at the Danish Design School in Copenhagen, Ms. Karner focused especially on eco furniture innovations. She strives to playfully “push the limits between modern, functional design, art and handicraft from different cultures.”

I hope we’ll be seeing more of this eco furniture trend in the future. It’s innovative, environmentally friendly, and it would trick my guests into thinking I was modern and classy.
