If you’re heading to college or to the workforce for the first time, or if you are thinking about going back to school or finally changing your dead-end career path, it’s time to look at an occupational area that is filled with life and energy – something far from “dead end.”

Energy jobs are the way of the future as the demand in this industry skyrockets because people are finally coming to grips with the fact that a heightened focus on sustainability and the environment is imperative to protect the earth for future generations. It’s a matter of both money in our workplaces and management of our world. Follow these tips to land an energy job successfully.

1. Go to college, as many energy job employers are looking for people who have been formally trained via a college degree program. Decide to study engineering – perhaps one of the most popular and lucrative career options in the renewable energy field – or even business. Even if you choose to study a non-technical area such as policy research and/or analysis, having a minor in energy and/or the environment will give you the background you need to compete with others in the job search market.

2. Complete an internship. Some schools make completing an energy-related internship a requirement, but even your school doesn’t , pursue one. The internship can give you real-world experience with and exposure to activities such as complying with environmental regulations, marketing a company’s energy-efficient enhancements, studying energy market trends and creating energy infrastructure projects. Use the internship as experience you can place on your resume and as a way to figure out what area of renewable energy work truly is your niche.

3. Apply for jobs and prepare thoroughly for your interview. Research the renewable energy company’s background and track record successfully, and be prepared to explain to a hiring manager why exactly you wish to work for that particular energy company. Determine whether you want to work in the area of solar or wind energy, for example, and zero in on policy analysis and economics when searching for entry-level work. Emphasize that you know how to conduct general energy trends research and possess other skills that are essential to the energy jobs field – such as understanding the policy process or managing energy clients.
