You’ve likely read the headlines about energy jobs being a huge myth. Many opponents to the energy jobs movement don’t think that renewable energy is here to stay, but the statistics tell a very different story. If you are wondering what to study as you enter the big halls of post-secondary education, or if you are wondering whether returning to school will be worth your penny, then consider these few reasons for why a career path in energy could be a wise one.
Clean Energy is Cost-Effective
Wind power has decreased by 90 percent over the past three decades thanks to the production tax credit, and the states that rely more on wind and solar energy than do their counterparts actually experienced much smaller electricity price hikes over the past few years.
More Money is Going to Clean Energy Worldwide
While U.S. officials bicker back and forth about the value of clean energy, the world is making a statement about the value it places on it: Investments in clean energy worldwide were higher than those in fossil fuels for the first time last year. The United States continues to claim a top spot in the investments it is making in research and development in the clean energy sector as well.
Clean Energy is an Ideal in the Case of an Emergency
At a time when a power plant fails or other catastrophic event takes place, wind energy is a reasonable source to rely on – a suitable addition to any area’s backup energy system. In fact, the more wind energy that can be harnessed, the more simple it is to actually manage this renewable energy source, and the more predictably this energy can be generated throughout a region or nation, experts say.
Clean Energy Means Far More Jobs
A whopping half a million jobs can be created in clean wind energy simply by getting the United States to acquire merely a fifth of its energy from wind (about 75,000 wind energy jobs have been produced so far). The money invested in clean energy yields three times more jobs than the money put into fossil fuels does, research shows. Wages also tend to be higher in these green jobs than they are in traditional fossil fuel jobs – about $7,000 more a year salary-wise for a green job when compared with its non-green counterpart.
