It’s no secret that many teachers’ jobs remain at stake every year throughout the United States as school districts struggle to save on operating costs. In many districts, however, solar panels are lighting the way to keeping more teachers working, which means more green technicians are working, too – all by saving just a couple of measly cents per kilowatt-hour.
As school districts are striving to save costs so that they can save their teachers, they are coming up with innovative methods for trimming their budgets without cutting teachers’ jobs. The decision of the school district in Scottsdale, Ariz., to install rooftop solar panels recently prevented six full-time instructors from saying goodbye to their jobs. It was all because the school district saved a whopping $300,000 on its electric bill in a year’s time.
Although the cost of installing solar panels was virtually unaffordable several years ago, that cost is dropping. In fact, the price dramatically has decreased just in the past three years, and with school districts having the option of leasing rather than buying solar panel equipment, the upfront cost of solar has become even lower for many. As a result, more than 500 schools in 43 states have turned to the power of the sun to provide energy to their buildings, thus keeping teachers employed.
The more companies begin to look at solar power as a viable option for saving on operational costs, the more employment can remain strong – not only at those companies but also in the solar panel sector as a whole. It’s a ray of hope for teachers who simply want to keep teaching, for workers who simply want to keep working, and for Mother Earth, who simply wants to keep being around for future generations.
