If you’re interested in going green at your home or business, the biggest debate may be whether to choose wind energy or solar energy. Surprisingly, despite the uproar about thousands of wind energy jobs potentially drifting off at the end of this year if the relevant tax credit isn’t renewed, wind power appears to have the greatest potential long-term in some cases, according to experts. So why exactly is wind power seemingly getting blown away by opponents?

Wind energy is a better option that solar power in some situations simply because a small wind turbine can provide a kilowatt to 50 kilowatts of power with a smaller initial investment than that required for solar power installation. Experts say you can expect to pay at least 20 percent more upfront for a solar system.

In addition, wind specifically is a better option if you live in a non-urban location where aesthetics and safety with wind turbines are not as much of an issue. If the winds around your home or business reach 11 miles per hour to 13 miles per hour, then you are a good candidate for a wind turbine.

Solar is indicated more if you live in a very sunny urban area, and it does offer the advantage of being not as dependent on sun resources as wind turbines are on wind resources. Furthermore, solar systems are relatively quiet and easy to maintain.

Both wind and solar have their advantages: You really cannot effectively have one without the other if the overarching goal is to allow homeowners and business owners in all parts of the United States to go green and save energy costs in the long run. Just as solar energy continues to claim a warm spot in the hearts of many Americans as it becomes more affordable, wind energy also needs to be given free reign to make going green a breeze for others.
