Fossil Fuels Appear to Be Winning the Energy Race Against Green Energy Sources – Image from ThinkQuest.org

Although U.S. President Barack Obama remains a huge green-jobs president and proponent, much of the fuel that is giving life to the modern economy in the energy sector actually is the production of natural gas and oil. This begs the question: When the winning presidential candidate assumes control of the Oval Office next year, how exactly will the outlook for green jobs really be?

Many politicians on the donkey side of the aisle are pushing the fact that green jobs are a critical addition to our contemporary economy. After all, Obama’s initial goal as president was to create five million green jobs and make the United States less dependent on foreign oil. Creating millions of green jobs hasn’t exactly happened, but 225,000 green jobs were developed by 2010 via the stimulus program, based on the White House.

Individuals on the elephant side of the aisle say that reality is proving their point: Natural gas and oil are truly fueling the economy and thus deserve more focus than do green jobs. Hydraulic fracturing can be attributed to the increase of fossil fuels production, as drillers now can access fuels in formations of shale rock that once were too expensive to retrieve.

Although hydraulic fracturing – or fracking – essentially puts millions of gallons of water and chemicals below the surface of the earth to release fossil fuels from the shale effectively, Democrats argue that it does have negative environmental effects on the surrounding water and air. The Obama administration has been contemplating safeguards on fracking but so far has allowed fracking to move forward.

A combination of reliance on fossil fuels – after all, why not go ahead and use the valuable resources already hidden beneath our feet – and reliance on promising green energy, which does show potential in various aspects of the energy industry, appears to be the intelligent approach, officials say. It doesn’t have to be one way or the other: A mixture of both can have positive effects on America’s independence from foreign oil as well as the formation of a wealth of energy jobs today and in the future.
