Everyone wants to keep household bills to a minimum and if they have the opportunity to save the environment too, that is an additional bonus. Smart meters are the latest in energy saving devices that can make a real difference to every household’s bills.

First Utility is just one company that can provide smart meters and energy saving devices that shows the consumer exactly where they can cut back on usage and save money.

Energy conservation and close monitoring are key to cutting energy costs

Energy conservation and reining in profligate use of energy is the only way of keeping costs for domestic and commercial users in check. If a light is left on in a room where no one is working or sitting, switch it off. If a room isn’t occupied can the heating be turned to low or maybe switched off? Does the heating where you live or work reduce you to wearing shorts and T shirt or loose, light clothing? Could you wear more clothes and turn the heating down to a manageable level thereby reducing energy use and consumption?

If the lighting in a room can be toned down have you considered using smaller wattage and energy saving light bulbs (as in the image) and do you need several lights on in the same room? Are you keeping windows and doors closed to prevent heat loss and is your home or business suitably insulated? Small changes made to lifestyles and work place practices can reduce energy consumption by as much as twenty five percent per year, without any noticeable effect to comfort and productivity.

Small changes; that is all it takes.

Just the simple task of replacing every old style incandescent light bulb in the home (or workplace) with energy saving bulbs can reduce your lighting costs by as much as eighty percent. If you monitor usage and only use them when they are needed, your potential savings overall are higher still.

Turning the thermostat down three degrees, say, from twenty three degrees centigrade to twenty degrees centigrade can save you ten to fifteen percent on your heating costs. Doesn’t matter if it is gas or electric the figure is about the same. You’ll not notice the drop in temperature other than you won’t be sitting around in your home in shorts and T shirt in the middle of winter. Twenty degrees is comfortable either at work or at home, and if you do feel a little chilly you can always slip on another layer of clothes without it costing a single penny.

Combined with Smart meters and energy monitoring tools at home or in the workplace, you can make the small changes which have potentially big advantages and benefits. Keeping on top of it soon becomes second nature and pretty soon you’ll be wondering why it took so long to make the changes.

First Utility is an independent energy supply company operating in the UK, with a remit to focus on energy-saving and conservation methods. The company offers products such as smart meters and energy monitoring units, and together with accounts which help you control how much energy you use, help you save money on your energy expenditure. On top of this the real time monitoring of energy usage as it happens enables consumers to make the subtle (and distinct) lifestyle changes to help improve further reductions on energy usage and overhead costs.
