A friend once told me, “There are two types of dads–dads who golf, and dads who hunt. They do one or the other, but not both.” So far, this insight has proved pretty accurate. Since the nature of hunting virtually negates any eco-friendly aspects the industry might be trying to conjure up, let’s talk about green golf gear for Father’s Day. (I feel some “on the green” puns coming on.)
If you’re looking for a green golf shirt for Father’s Day, you shouldn’t have to search far and wide. Look for organic shirts and pants by Puma, and Tiger Woods Apparel. One piece that may be hard to find is Nike’s Organic Mercerized Stripe Polo. Its simple, classic striped pattern often sells out quickly. Green golf pants and shorts made of tencil, hemp and organic cotton are usually within easy reach, too.
Even being on the green has gotten greener (you can’t say you weren’t warned). Biodegradable green golf tees by companies like XT-1 are being designed 20% bigger to add stability to the ball, and won’t damage mower blades.
I’ve heard that too many golf balls in the oceans may be responsible for rising water levels.* It’s a good thing they’ve invented water-soluble Eco Golf Balls. These 100% non-toxic green golf balls are made of wood and won’t damage our already straining ocean systems. They biodegrade within 3 to 6 months in ocean water, and are also safe for fresh water. Even the U.S. Coast Guard has approved them for being hit into the sea.
Father’s Day is fast approaching, so go out and find a pair of green golf pants, a biodegradable golf ball and send Dad “on the green.”
* I haven’t heard this anywhere. I just made it up.
