A quarter of all solar energy jobs in the United States belong to California as the growth of this green technology field continues boom across the country. A few other states on the East Coast, West Coast and in the South also recently made the list of the top 10 U.S. states for providing these green jobs as the number of solar energy jobs skyrockets despite a fledgling economy nationwide.

According to the National Solar Jobs Census 2011 through the Solar Foundation, a whopping 25,575 green jobs in the solar industry out of 100,237 across all 50 states were available in California. Only 6,186 solar energy green jobs were present in Colorado, which actually was the state just behind California. This means the solar energy job count in California is quadruple that of state with the next highest job count in the green industry.

“California industry and policymakers have a tremendous opportunity to build on this solid foundation and make solar a centerpiece of the state’s energy policy,” said Michelle Kinman, a clean energy advocate for Environment California, an environmental advocacy organization.

Solar Energy Jobs Focus Grows Around the Country

The rise in the number of green jobs in solar energy in the United States is expected to increase 24 percent over the next year. This will mean 24,000 new green jobs in the solar energy field.

Although overall job growth in the United States was below 1 percent from August 2010 to August 2011, job growth in the solar industry rose almost 7 percent in the areas of large-scale power generation, residential production and installation.

The other states besides California and Colorado that have provided the largest number of solar energy jobs include Arizona, Pennsylvania, New York, Florida, Texas, Oregon, New Jersey and Massachusetts. Arizona’s job count was at 4,786, while Massachusetts featured 2,395 jobs.

“This report shows that the solar industry is not only creating green jobs across California but that the industry is forecast to continue growing at a much faster pace than the overall U.S. economy,” Kinman said.
