Facebook’s newest data center will be green as can be while being situated in a location that is snow white. The social networking site company center, which is slated to be completed by 2014, will use hydropower while being located 60 miles outside of the Arctic Circle.

The new Facebook establishment should include three buildings that are 300,000 square feet in size and will be placed in Lulea, Sweden. The server buildings will receive their power from hydropower stations located close by.

Hydropower is power generated by the energy of moving water. This environmentally friendly source of power will enable Facebook to reduce its ecological footprint and help preserve the environment. In addition, the company’s presence in Sweden likely will enhance the performance of the popular website, which boasts about 800 million users, for computer users throughout Europe.

The facility will be Facebook’s first one in a country other than the United States. Its most recent one was erected in North Carolina, although other server facilities are located in Oregon, Virginia and California as well.

Company officials chose Sweden for its next set of buildings because the cooler temperatures there will help reduce the costs of keeping servers from getting too hot. Temperatures typically do not rise above 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer season in Sweden.
