Spring is in the air, which means wedding season is also here. As you hunt for that perfect high-end necklace and earrings set or for that perfect bridesmaid gift this week, you very well could be hunting Mother Earth down without even knowing it. Rather than simply purchasing the prettiest thing off the shelf without paying attention to where it comes from, now is an ideal time to buy a little high-end “bling” while also buying into the idea that Mother Nature will enjoy your Big Day even more if strive to keep both yourself and her brilliantly green.

Brilliant Earth offers ethical origin fine jewelry, ranging from diamond earrings to sapphire earrings. The goal of this company is to provide brilliant jewelry with uncompromised ethics. In fact, it is the leading provider of conflict-free diamonds and emphasizes its mission to serve the socially conscious consumer. In all of its fine jewelry, the company essentially uses recycled precious metals, as gold mining and the mining of other meals is one of the most ecologically destructive processes. This is because many “dirty” gold mines release mercury and cyanide into local sources of water and also are linked to inhumane work practices.

In fact, a whopping 20 tons of ore are needed to create just one ring. Rather than getting its materials from 20 ores, Brilliant Earth gets its jewelry from a myriad of creative sources – electronics components, industrial-use metals and even existing jewelry. You might be thinking, so is the company’s gold ring truly a gold ring then? Brilliant Earth emphasizes that the metals they obtain are re-refined back to their pure elements, thus making them equivalent to metals that are newly mined.

The green company, however, has not totally ruled out mining altogether. It does partner with Oro Verde, which specializes in gold that is responsibly harvested from South American cooperatives – meaning that planet-friendly practices are employed to generate the gold mined. For instance, Oro Verde (with “verde” meaning “green” in Spanish) supports the health of communities, does not use hazardous chemicals and restores ecosystems that have been disturbed by other companies that mine.

Looking brilliant does not have to cost the earth, and in fact, it can make the earth look just as brilliant as you do. A little green “bling” can go a long way as you walk down the aisle or along the ocean coast line, making sure that your granddaughter also has that opportunity in coming generations.
