More than 500,000 low-income houses across the United States have become more energy-efficient and more than 114,000 Americans have found green jobs as a result of the nation’s push to become more green and independent of foreign oil, the U.S. Department of Energy announced this week.

Hundreds of thousands of households are improving their environmental footprints through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Signed into law in 2009, the ARRA provides $5 billion in funding to the Weatherization Assistance Program over three years. Low-income households thus are able to save hundreds of dollars annually on their energy bills following changes made to their homes.

The ARRA also has generated more than 14,000 green jobs in the energy-efficiency housing industry.

“We are in a race to capitalize on the huge economic and job growth potential of the clean energy economy,” Deputy Secretary Daniel Poneman said. “Other countries like China are already moving aggressively to develop and deploy these technologies, but with continued investments in innovation, this is a race we can win.”

Solar energy jobs also rise through national efforts

During the past two years, the number of employees working in the solar energy field has doubled, also demonstrating America’s poignant focus on becoming more of a green nation. The number of solar energy industry employees in the United States today is more than 100,000 compared with just 46,000 solar energy employees in 2009, according to the nonprofit organization Solar Foundation.

In addition, Americans’ desire for solar photovoltaics has increased by about 70 percent over last year, according to a report released this week by the Solar Energy Industries Association.

“Our investments in clean energy innovation are creating hundreds of thousands of jobs around the country, developing entire industries and supply chains and helping to make American companies to become more competitive,” Poneman said.
