Green travel web series launches campaign on Kickstarter. Image via The Green Globetrotter
I want to change the way the world travels. It won’t be an easy task, but it is an incredibly crucial one. If we don’t make the effort to improve the impact of our voyages, we may lose the beautiful and unique places we love to visit within a few decades.
To spread this message, I recently launched a project called The Green Globetrotter on the popular crowd-funding website, Kickstarter. As a web series that educates and inspires people to travel more sustainably, I’m hoping that The Green Globetrotter will resonate with today’s more conscious consumer.
The Green Globetrotter’s objective on Kickstarter is to raise the funds to film Season One of its web series. During this season, my team will explore three different destinations and discover how giving back and minimizing one’s tourist footprint will help preserve the earth’s future while still providing an authentic, unique, and rewarding travel experience. The series will be complemented by blogs, tweets, and photos and will provide green travel tips as well as explore answers to questions such as, “Does carbon offsetting really make a difference?”.
Although crowd-funding is not the most typical form of investment, I chose it as my primary method for financing this endeavor because it will help the series establish an audience and garner interest. It also allows the public to feel more connected to the final product. The only drawback? I have 30 days (or until August 8th) to hit my goal amount of $200,000, or the concept will have to return to the drawing board. Per Kickstarter’s guidelines, it’s all or nothing when it comes to funding. But having seen the negative impact of travel firsthand and the changes we can make once we are aware of it, this is a risk I am willing to take. Hopefully, the world is, too.
