In green news yesterday, “The Big Brown Machine,” otherwise known as the United Parcel Service (UPS) and the world’s largest live-events company Live Nation Entertainment announced a landmark, multi-year environmentally friendly sponsorship alliance. The deal between the two industry behemoths is intended to promote UPS’s environmentally friendly logistics solutions to the millions of Live Nation Entertainment music fans across North America as well as recording artists committed to reducing the environmental impact of their concert tours.

The environmentally friendly alliance will make UPS the exclusive global package, shipping and logistics provider for Live Nation Entertainment and for certain Live Nation Entertainment tours and venues. According to Live Nation Entertainment’s Investor website, the Beverly Hills, CA-based company promotes or produces approximately 22,000 annual events, including music concerts, with total attendance exceeding 50 million which is more than the NBA, NFL, and NHL combined. As of September 30, 2005, Live Nation owned or operated 117 venues, consisting of 75 in the U.S. and 42 international venues.

Live Nation Entertainment and Participating Artists Can Purchase CO2 offsets through Environmentally Friendly Alliance

UPS, which began utilizing hybrid vehicles for local delivery in May 2007 and was awarded a Clean Air Excellence Award from the United States Environmental Protection Agency because of their alternative fuel program, will also serve as an Official Sustainability Partner of Live Nation Entertainment. The international shipping and live-events duo will be working toward environmentally friendly products and services across all Live Nation Entertainment tours and venues. The initial step in this environmentally friendly sustainability effort is to provide carbon neutral UPS shipping for music fans across the United States. Through UPS, Live Nation Entertainment will purchase certified carbon CO2 offsets to mitigate the emissions produced by the transportation of ticket orders for events at Live Nation owned and operated venues and merchandise purchased from the Live Nation Entertainment store.

Also, as part of the environmentally friendly alliance, UPS will be launching an innovative new sustainability program created exclusively for the live music industry to help eco-conscious musical artists reduce the CO2 output generated by the transport of their concert tours. Participating artists will receive accurate and verified measurements of their existing transportation carbon footprint in addition to a customized plan to reduce emissions and the option to mitigate any remaining CO2 output by purchasing and retiring certified carbon offsetsfrom The Big “Green” Machine.
