Don’t throw all caution to the wind as far as your green job search is concerned. If you’re looking for the best chance of getting into the high-demand green jobs sector, then consider moving to the top U.S. cities for hiring wind employees. Here are the top five metropolitan areas where finding a wind job – particularly that of an engineer but also a wind turbine service technician or product manager – should be the easiest to do, simply based on the fact that these cities had the largest number of job advertisements.
In Albany – and throughout the state of New York in general – contemporary incentives for installing wind generators or wind turbines are generous. Combined with federal incentives, consumers can save up to 50 percent on their wind turbine products, which translates to more wind jobs in this region. For hiring managers in Albany, locating qualified applicants with the specialized skills required to do the job appears to be the most difficult of any of the cities in this list. In fact, the number of job postings in the city actually dropped by 18 percent between last year and 2012, according to Wanted Analytics. However, because competition is relatively low here, finding a job in this city is easier if you are qualified.
Philadelphia and Erie
Pennsylvania is known for its abundant amount of wind energy along with its generous wind debates, thus also sparking demand for wind products and subsequently wind jobs. Recruiters for wind jobs in the city of Philadelphia actually should have the easiest time with filling their vacant wind jobs than any other of the other cities on this list. Still, the competition also is higher in Philadelphia, thus making the process of finding work in the City of Brotherly Love harder. Erie, Pennsylvania, also is a top city for wind jobs here in the state of Pennsylvania.
Houston is well known for its exploration of wind power following Hurricane Katrina a few years ago. The storm ruined the gas and oil infrastructure that the city relies on for its electricity, so that is what propelled the Space City to focus on wind energy. In 2008, wind energy constituted a quarter of the city’s electricity sources. The move helps the city while also saving customers money. This demand has led to a rise in wind jobs here.
Cincinnati, of all of the cities on this list, had the highest boost in the number of wind jobs advertised between last year and 2012 – a whopping 132 percent. The University of Cincinnati in April even conducted research that resulted in cutting-edge software to track the health of wind turbines. Cutting-edge job opportunities are strong here in The Queen City.
