The Copenhagen Fashion Summit is something of an eco-fashion show, competition and conference all in one. This year over 15 Nordic designers were invited to choose up to five eco-trend fabrics, and use them to create sustainable styles to showcase on the runway.
Participating eco-trend designers had over 70 sustainable textiles to choose from, including organic wool, organic cotton, milk fabric, Ingeo, recycled polyester, Newlife, recycled denim and more. Most of them also used fabric scraps and cuttings, as well as vintage pieces.
The winner of the eco-fashion contest is yet to be announced. He or she will be featured in WHITE’s next trade show, a Global Organic Textiles eco-trend certification of sustainability, and a VIP invite to Pure London.
The Copenhagen Fashion Summit is typically held in conjunction with the COP15 Climate Change Conference, as a way for the international fashion community to come together and pioneer new and innovative eco-trends to make their industry even more sustainable. This year, 1,043 stakeholders attended from 27 different countries, and the focus was on how to get the average consumer more interested and involved in eco-fashion. The framework they devised is based on previous successes, and will be presented at a UN conference in June.
The one-day event was held in the Danish Opera House, and featured keynotes like Gucci and Greenpeace. It was sponsored by H&M and Nordic Initiative Clean and Ethical (which gets to use the cute acronym NICE).
I applaud the entire industry for their dedication to eco-trends, and their efforts to expand it and make it ever more popular. While everyone should do their part, I don’t think designers have to stress out. Eco-fashion is more than a trend. It’s the way of the future.
