Multiple Mobile Phone Apps Are Making Local Shoppers Even Greener – Image from IStockPhoto.com

If you either work in the mobile apps industry or use mobile apps regularly, then you are well on your way to joining an environmental jobs trend that should put Mother Earth back in the spotlight – even if your brain is really zeroed in on that pair of pumps you’ve been tempted to find and buy at your local department store. And if you own a business and want to become even more green in your local area, then mobile apps very well could be your ticket.

Little did we know years ago when eCommerce became all the rave that years later, mobile app developing roles could be considered environmental jobs – and mobile app users (both customers and businesses) could be considered environmental supporters with the simple touch of a screen.

Although eCommerce is becoming more mainstream and convenient, the unavoidable truth is that still only 7 percent of product purchases take place online. That means a whopping 97 percent of people still make a bulk of their purchases at traditional stores. However, several mobile apps are helping shoppers to reduce their environmental footprints by allowing them to find what they want without even stepping foot in a store.

Driving around to find that favorite purse, or that favorite handyman’s tool, therefore has been eliminated to the benefit of the environment. Greenhouse gases are being emitted into the atmosphere less often, making the ozone layer a little more healthy. Here are three mobile apps, in particular, that are creating environmental jobs and making our earth a bit greener.

Shopkick: This mobile app actually rewards customers for shopping at a particular store. The more you enter your local version of a national retail outfit, the more rewards you receive. This type of app not only allows businesses to get more loyalty out of its clients but also encourages customers to shop more locally, a much greener way to shop.

Compass: This mobile app from JiWire has the ability to geolocate products from more than 20,000 stores. You simply find your product electronically and then you can call or text the store to hold the item you want. This gets rid of the need to drive around and make excess trips to stores, and it simply makes customers feel more valued.

AroundMe: This mobile app, like Compass, uses geolocating abilities as well – but this one specifically makes locating a particular local shop convenient. You can look for particular grocery stores, gas stations, eateries or hotels. In fact, if you’re looking for a hotel that is not all booked up, or if you’re looking for a gas station that is under $4, AroundMe is your go-to app. Like the other apps, you travel less often, thus keeping your environmental footprint low.
