As the world around you is getting greener with the arrival of spring – and a seemingly early one, at that – going green is on the minds of your neighbors, co-workers and local business people as well. Daily living and working habits are changing slowly, one by one, and as more people join the green trend movement, a huge planetary impact is sure to be felt nationwide. Here are the top five green trends this week.

1. Bottled Water Has Become Old-School. Many people actually are trying to become more eco-friendly by ditching the 25-water bottles-per-pack products sold in the store. Instead, more consumers are turning to refillable water bottles that are just as convenient to reuse. By engaging in this trend, more customers are reducing their need to buy all of that extra plastic that – even if recycled rather than going to a landfill – still requires extra effort and gasoline to transport to recycling facilities. The number of people who currently are using refillable water bottles is about 39 percent, up from 34 percent in February, according to a Harris Interactive Inc. poll.

2. Print Subscriptions are Slowing Down in Popularity. The days of the traditional newspaper are fading quickly. In an effort to save more money as well as become greener by saving the earth’s trees, more Americans are following the trend of relying on the Internet for information and thus have canceled their print media subscriptions. The statistic recently lingered at about 24 percent of people who have stopped magazine subscriptions or newspaper deliveries.

3. Brown Bag Lunches are Tasting Even Better These Days. The statistic that the average American spends almost $2,000 annually on eating out at lunch is finally sinking into many employees’ minds. More workers are opting to bring their own lunches from home – a trend that will enable them to save more money but also help to save the earth by driving less often to restaurants (which decreases the output of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere). The total percentage of people who are joining the green trend of bringing their own lunches essentially has increased from 45 percent in February to 48 percent in March.

4. Dry Cleaning Trips Have Come to a Slowdown. More Americans are choosing to visit their local dry cleaners less often as part of their money-saving efforts. This trend also is environmentally friendly because they translate to fewer trips in the car. Almost a quarter of people currently admit to relying less on dry cleaning.

5. Poultry are the New Pets. Dogs aren’t the only ones who are allowed to be man’s best friend. Now, more Americans actually are raising chickens in their backyards for several reasons: The eggs are fresh, and these pets are pretty cheap to care for. Believe it or not, the trend of raising chickens is a green trend in that chickens provide homeowners with weed and bug control that eliminates the need for pesticides. This is a huge advantage in that pesticides generally are not good for the environment due to the threat of water and air contamination that is associated with them.
